Doe Lake Cottage

Completed 2020

Location: Muskoka, Ontario, Canada

Area: 232 sqm / 2,500 sqft

This two-storey, all season, post and beam lakeside residence consists of 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a double garage, mudroom, and a double height living and dining area with open kitchen tucked under the mezzanine.

The communal space, master bedroom and exterior decks are oriented to the southwest, taking advantage of the spectacular views of the lake & sunset. The L-shaped layout of the building creates a courtyard area on the lake side, shielding it from the road & neighbours for privacy. Throughout the house, carefully placed windows frame the surrounding landscape.

In-floor radiant heating & a wood stove warm the space in winter, while strategically positioned operable windows provide natural cross-ventilation in the summer, eliminating the need for air conditioning. With black & white wood siding on the exterior, birch paneling adds warmth and intimacy to the living area & other spaces inside. Cathedral ceilings in the main space & master bedroom create a sense of bright & airy spaciousness.

Toronto House Addition / Renovation

2016-19

Location: Toronto, Canada

Area of addition: 140 sqm / 1,500 sqft

Area of renovation: 75 sqm / 800 sqft

The project includes a new rear addition plus basement, as well as renovation of the existing detached single-family house, including underpinning of the existing basement.

The ground floor includes a large mudroom, powder room, pantry and two living areas. The larger area has an open kitchen, dining and sitting area with fireplace, with a large window facing the back yard. The second floor has a master bedroom with ensuite bathroom, plus two bedrooms and a second bathroom. From the bright, double height stairwell, a lateral stair leads up to the bright, open concept attic space.

The asymmetrically sloped roof of the addition gives the attic the needed headroom while allowing for natural illumination of the main stairwell through skylights. The slope matches that of the existing roof, thereby visually integrating new with old.

House Interior

Completed 2014

Location: Krakow, Poland

Area: 80 sqm / 861 sqft

Interior design for new two-storey two-bedroom house. The project included minor renovations, a new stair, kitchen, two bathrooms, interior finishes, lighting strategy, custom millwork and furniture selection.

Clean lines and a subdued colour palette create a feeling of calmness and airy brightness. The finishes include lots of white, with silver oak hardwood floors and matching ash doors. Walnut veneer was used in millwork for accent, with furniture to match (Sadu bedouin textiles, with lots of red, also providing colour accent). The kitchen used modified IKEA cabinets with custom walnut veneer fronts and a granite countertop.

The bright and airy upstairs bathroom makes the most of the tight space under the sloped roof of the house

Hidden cove lighting was used in the bedrooms and bathroom. Glass block and glazed doors maximize natural light. Custom millwork included a special display case for a collection of antique dallahs (Middle Eastern coffee pots) as well as a door fitted with a laser-cut Arabic pattern.

Studio Apartment

Completed 2007

Location: Krakow, Poland

Area: 39 sqm / 420 sqft

The new studio apartment was designed with flexibility in mind, allowing for the possibility of separating the sleeping area from the living room and open concept kitchen, using sliding panels. The lighting strategy avoided ceiling lights so as to maximize ceiling height. Different lighting effects and moods could be created, including indirect cove lighting and lights inside shelf niches.
